Culture – The 9th edition of the Rodriguan Cultural Day was recently held in Pointe aux Sables, highlighting the richness and authenticity of Rodrigues Island’s culture. Organised by the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund in collaboration with the Mouvement Solidarité Rodrigues, the event brought together artists, artisans, and tradition enthusiasts around a shared goal: to promote and preserve Rodrigues' unique heritage.
Throughout the day, visitors were invited to explore a wide range of Rodriguan cultural expressions. Traditional music, local crafts, folk dances, and authentic cuisine offered a vivid insight into the island's way of life. This annual gathering serves not only to revive cultural memory but also to pass on valuable knowledge and skills to younger generations.
Rodriguan culture holds a special place within the broader Mauritian identity. Its living heritage — rooted in simplicity, creativity, and strong ecological awareness — is a precious asset for the Republic of Mauritius. Rodrigues is often cited as a model in environmental efforts, notably for its ban on single-use plastics.
The event also provided a platform to highlight the island’s socio-economic progress: the growth of craftsmanship, local small businesses, agricultural projects, and food security initiatives. Major developments are underway, such as the expansion of the Plaine Corail airport, improvements in healthcare services, and the upcoming implementation of a waste sorting system.
This day reaffirmed the essential role Rodrigues plays in building a diverse, united, and culturally rich nation, and the importance of continuing to support initiatives aimed at preserving this unique island identity.
