Centenarian  Idriss Rumjaun marked his 100th birthday on Saturday, 12 July 2025, during an official ceremony held at the Social Welfare Centre in Caroline, Bel Air Rivière Sèche. Surrounded by family, friends, and several government representatives, he was honoured for his remarkable life journey and longevity.

Born in 1925, Mr Rumjaun is the youngest of four siblings. His father worked at the Beau Plan Sugar Estate, while his mother was a homemaker. After completing his education up to Standard IV, he began working as a labourer and later cultivated his own sugarcane fields until he lost his eyesight in 2014.

In 1949, he married Bibi Hazerah Carrim, also a sugar estate worker who later turned to cattle rearing. Today, Idriss Rumjaun is the proud patriarch of a large family: 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Despite vision loss and a fractured hip, he remains mentally alert, enjoys blended meals, listens to the radio, and still takes pleasure in fresh vegetables, meat, and traditional Mauritian snacks. He attributes his long life to his deep faith, healthy lifestyle, and the unwavering love of his family, along with regular home medical visits.
